Why Microsoft Socl is Too Little, Too Late!

SoclLast November, I wrote a post on Microsoft’s grand plan to launch socl – a social search platform. Back then, it was believed that socl would be a unique social network that would carve out its own space despite the intimidating presence of Facebook and Twitter. Since then, there was no news on when and if socl would ever launched.

That changed earlier this week when so.cl finally saw the light of the day. While so.cl does highlight Microsoft’s efforts to experiment in the social media space, I think it’s too little too late to make any serious impact in the social media world on a scale perspective.

What is socl?

Socl is a niche social search service aimed at students. It lets students to collaborate, sharing the results of Internet searches and the photos, videos and stories they uncover. Microsoft says ‘it’s a new way to learn’ and so.cl provides a place where students can share and learn from each other.

Although socl has a distinctively student focus, it can be used by others as well. After all, it’s all about users posting messages and tagging images, videos, and links as they would on any other social site.

Socl isn’t a Facebook Competitor

Microsoft says so.cl isn’t meant to compete with Facebook. It’s aimed at a specific audience with the sole purpose of serving student collaborative learning. While it’s good to see companies build experimental social networks with a certain target audience in mind, I’m not sure if that approach would work well when compared to the rule-all-users approach of Facebook and Twitter.

Too Little?

I think socl in its current form offers too little to make a meaningful impact. There’s a strong need to make it feature rich in order to trigger widespread adoption among students. Currently, it’s just an image board where you post and share web-based content depending on categories such as movies, sports etc. If that’s what Microsoft wanted to build, it should look at Pinterest as a case study.

All in all, I think so.cl lacks mass appeal – a critical success parameter for any social network.

Too Late

Time is of essence. It would have probably been a different story had Microsoft launched so.cl last year before Pinterest went viral. Despite its IPO getting mixed reviews, I think it’s firmly cemented Facebook as the world’s leading social network.

All in all, socl to me appears a bit outdated. Perhaps, Microsoft is marketing it aptly –  “here is a new social network but it’s not really meant for you.” You’re spot on – socl is definitely not meant for me!

  1. I think so.cl reminds me mostly of Microsofts version of Google+, where Bing is a very visible feature. After all, so far So.cl. is about search. I am a little concerned about the privacy issues – since topics of search appears as a “status update”. Also I am excited to see how Microsoft will handle the infiltration of business pages on a “social media aimed at research”. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

    My take away was, Socl is a bit like Pinterest, but instead of having to trudge through everyone’s myriad pinboards, you could cruise/peruse by topic. That was really interesting to me. But as a social network, I am not understanding how it will work.
