What Your Twitter Strategy Should Be in 2011

[smartads]

Happy New Year to all smedio readers! With the holiday season coming to an end and the arrival of Year 2011, it’s time to get back to “business as usual”. From a business perspective, it’s the best time to get ready for the New Year – formulate business plans and develop your marketing strategy for 2011.

Year 2010 saw a number of changes in the marketing world with Twitter and Facebook firmly taking over the reins from conventional marketing channels. Twitter grew by leaps and bounds last year and is further expected to surge this year. As a business, you need to have a strategy in place to make the most out of Twitter in 2011. What should be your business’ Twitter strategy for year 2011? Let’s dig deeper to find out.

Twitter Business Tools

Twitter already has several million business users and I’d expect a large number of new users join the ship in 2011. Twitter transformed completely in year 2010 and became more business-friendly than ever. The trend is expected to continue this year and Twitter set the precedent by launching a revamped online business center last month.

For newbie business users, the online business center is a great place to learn how to use Twitter. My advice to new Twitter users is to spend enough time to understand how things work in Tweetverse and then decide on the best strategy on how you should go about using it. For example, using promoted tweets can help spread the word about your business at a nominal cost; therefore it’s worth exploring further.

Business Objectives for New Year

It’s often said that one size fits all approach does not work in the business world. Therefore, there is no ubiquitous Twitter strategy which would work just as well for all businesses. Your Twitter strategy should be based on your business objectives for the New Year and not the other way around.

Once you have a clear understanding of your business goals for year 2011, develop a Twitter strategy best-suited to accomplish those objectives.

Tweet Plan

The onset of New Year is a perfect time to look at your existing Tweet Plan and modify it as required. If you haven’t tweeted enough last year, make a commitment to stick to your planned tweeting schedule for year 2011.

For the last two years, I follow a daily Tweet Plan where I login to Twitter twice a day – mornings and evenings. It lets my tweets reach out to people before they begin their work day and my evening session lets me reply to any direct messages and re-tweet any interesting tweets from my followers.

Profile

New Year is a good time to introduce some new and innovative changes to your Twitter profile. It brings about a welcome change which is likely to drag your follower’s attention. And it’s not just a matter of appearance; make sure that your revamped Twitter profile provides interesting and informational content about your business.

Tweets

Tweets are the lifeline of Twitter, so there’s no way you can afford to ignore them. Make sure to Tweet meaningful and interesting information. Re-tweet industry news and valuable business information that would be relevant to your followers. Tweet enough to keep your followers engaged but don’t over do it as nobody like to be spammed with a large number of messages.

All in all, I’d expect year 2011 to be another fantastic year for Twitter business users. What’s your Twitter strategy for 2011? Please share your opinion by leaving a comment below this post.

  1. The best tip for the new year is to be consistent with your efforts in the previous one. Not letting the guard off, keeping on your toes with innovation and new tools and trends, reading, commenting, writing, connecting. It feels like starting another trip, a mix of both good and bad feelings, but still something exciting and full of potential.

  2. Can you give us some more substantive advice? How can we increase visibility for our Reality TV series beyond hashtagging and targeting followers who watch this genre?

  3. @ A week with my father….I find it to be most effective when you are 1. Consistent. I have the same greeting for morning and the same goodnight each evening around the same time everyday. It’s not that it’s predictable I like to say it’s more reliable to my followers to know what’s to come and what to look forward to the new day ahead of following us. 2. Timing. So very important I find in set n specific times to tweet as if it’s a 9-5. 3. Keep it fun and interesting for your target audience, offer prizes and giveaways. You can get these things fairly reasonable online. I have only been tweeting now just shy over a month and with over 330 followers, I was told whatever I’m doing just keep it up! I hope that you can take what I’m doing and master it.

We’re hoping to enlist our existing loyal customers in both stores to get on the Twitter bandwagon! 🙂 We want to start posting special deals for them – and anyone on Twitter – who can dash in within 8 hours or so for “Steal-it Deals” – Should be fun!
