Facebook and smartphones are all the rage these days. Last February, Facebook had nearly 100 million mobile users per month. Now, that count has gone up to 250 million. And if the current growth rate is anything to go by, Facebook looks all set to double that count within the next two years.
It’s understandable that managing such a massive user base is no child’s play. Therefore, Facebook recently announced an upgrade to its mobile site that makes it compatible with all phones. That effectively means touch.facebook.com and m.facebook.com are being merged into the same site. The idea is to provide the best possible mobile Facebook experience no matter what device you’re using.
250 Million Mobile Users
No other site on the internet boasts of such a massive following from the mobile user fraternity. With 250 million mobile users, nearly 40% of the current Facebook population uses mobile version on a monthly basis. Quiet remarkable – I’d say.
From a business perspective, it’s a timely reminder that ignoring mobile web in your overall strategy can prove to be catastrophic. Facebook mobile site is a case in point that it’s possible to provide an excellent mobile web experience to your customers, irrespective of whichever device they use.
One size fits all
Of course, businesses that are using Facebook for their advertising and marketing needs are likely to benefit by the explosive growth of Facebook’s mobile population. The best part is businesses and customers remain oblivious to the changes made by Facebook so they can continue using it as if nothing has changed.
Though I usually maintain that one size fits all isn’t the best approach in social media world, in this case Facebook proved me wrong.

I’ve always maintained social media and mobile compliment each other perfectly. A majority of people in my professional circle use smartphones to access Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
More than anything, I believe Facebook’s increasing mobile population is an indication of a massive opportunity that exists from tapping the best of both worlds – smartphones and social media.
