The problem with Tumblr is their terms of service. It should be made worth noting that you don’t actually have the content you post on Tumblr in YOUR possession; you have them on their servers, which (as we saw a few weeks ago) could go down for a day or two (or more).
WordPress has been developing features that allow you to take a normal blog and make it more “Tumbl-esque” to allow for better multimedia control. With Woo Tumblog (or one of the many “tumblog” WordPress themes out there) you can host the site yourself, make it look however you want, and know that at the end of the day the content is yours and yours alone.
I don’t have an issue with tumblr – heck, I have one as well. But it’s worth mentioning the risks as well as the rewards, and that there are other options out there. Especially if one of those other options is powering 15% of the Internet at the moment 🙂

That is the problem I see with people dependent on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr – – when the trend for those platforms dies down, what happens to the content when the user moves on? I agree. But where WordPress fails in comparison to Tumblr is in ease of publishing. While I can enable WP to be Tumbl-like, I still can’t use the official iOS app to post using those post formats. The Tumblr app supports these formats with ease. While I wish I could export the content, it’s a minor issue because of the to how easily I can create said content.
The WooThemes team has Express – it allows you to post to a WooTumblog enabled (or a WooThemes official tumblog) site. It’s got a bit of a price tag, but I use it on my personal blog and I love it.
The iOS app for WordPress is open source – technically anyone who’s got an urge to see the post formats in the app can add it, but unfortunately most WordPress enthusiasts are not mobile developers, so the app goes largely untouched except for version compatibility.
Sounds like you have your solution, Matthew. You can easily create your content all day long – just don’t expect to take it with you anywhere.
