So, in essence, Path initially claimed to solve a problem that most people didn’t even consider to be a problem. However, in its second innings, Path promises to be more than a sharing application. It wants to be a digital journal that documents your days with a push of a button. What’s Path up to now and will it pay off? Let’s take a deeper look.
Smart Journal
First things first, I’m glad Path co-founder and CEO Dave Morin realized that his company was on the wrong ‘path’. Two wrongs never make a right and social networks are no exception to that rule. In its second homecoming, Path 2 aims to be a “smart journal” that catalogs all moments of your daily life. It’s not just photos and videos, Path has interesting features that let you keep track of your thoughts, the music you’re listening to, your location and what you are doing where.
In short, Path lets you share every minute detail of your life with others. The good part – you can choose to keep each update entirely to yourself, share it with your Path or share it publicly via Facebook, Twitter, or Foursquare.
Mobile
Mobile is increasingly emerging as the most popular medium to access social networks. Path has got that right – it’s offering innovative mobile apps for Android and iPhone users. To start off, Path began as an iPhone application for sharing photos and videos and it eventually added the ability to add one of five emoticons to their friends’ photos. As you’d expect, that plan failed miserably.
Path’s new mobile apps have taken a refreshingly different approach; the app creatively animates a number of icons that spring out for the user to interact with. The icons lets users take photos by clicking on a camera logo, check-in to locations with friends through a location icon or tell Path that they are sleeping. There are timestamps that only appears when someone scrolls through the app, showing the time and day that friends updated their Path. All in all, a pretty neat concept.
Happy Path?
Of course, it would be premature to declare the resurrected Path as a social media success. It has several pitfalls at the moment. For a start, it only allows 150 friends at the moment. Secondly, though the auto-posting feature sounds cool, it’s a risky proposition as it would automatically expose a user’s location to others. Though the feature is opt-in, I’d expect a few users facing privacy blues on that front.
All in all, I’d like to appreciate Dave Morrin’s efforts in order to induce fresh life into Path. I like the concept of a smart journal that’s easily accessible via mobile apps.
