I’m no “Paul the Octopus”, in fact I generally refrain myself from making any predictions since I’m not very good at it. However, being an active social media activist, I’m often quizzed on my perception regarding the future of social media.

How will the social media scenario change 5 years from now? Will Twitter and Facebook still be as popular as today? Or will the new breed of enterprise social networking such as Yammer take over the reigns of social media.

Social Media is evolving continuously

It’s remarkable how social media has re-invented itself over the course of last few years with changing technology landscape. Since social media is dynamic and adaptive to changes, it has survived the test of time in the past and will continue to do so in the future as well.

I have no doubt that the next 5 years will see a dramatic change in the way the world perceives social media. It will become an integral part of our daily lives and it’s going to redefine our content consumption habits.

The Mobile Factor

The smartphone boom has been a blessing in disguise for social media and vice-versa. Mobile and Social media compliment each other wonderfully to spread the other’s reach. The number of people using smartphones to access social media has sky rocketed in the last year or so and will continue to explode for the next 5 years.

Innovation is the key

Several people ask me if it’s possible to replicate the success of Facebook and Twitter. I, for one, am not in favor of building clones to cash in on the popularity of existing sites. In fact, I hate all such clones.

I believe innovation is the key to success in social media. If you think about building another Facebook, you are limiting your imagination. IMO, social media follows the golden rule – “Markets are conversations” and it’s up to your imagination and creativity to come up with an innovative solution based on the principle.

Twitter and Facebook aren’t resting on their laurels. They realize the importance of innovation and are continuously striving hard to re-invent themselves by adding new cool features.

Social Media for Enterprise

I believe that the biggest change in social media landscape for the next 5 years will be in the enterprise segment. Social media for enterprise is still at a nascent stage and offers a massive untapped opportunity. The initial response to tools such as Salesforce Chatter and Yammer has been encouraging and the signs are ominous for the next big “social media for the enterprise” revolution.

All good things come to an end so what about social media?

Whoever said that “all good things come to an end” was surely a pessimist. I’m quiet certain that social media will not only manage to stand its ground in the next 5 years; it will grow manifold in footprint. Who knows it might then be called “Social Web”, “Enterprise Web”, “Social Enterprise Collaboration” or something else.

Who cares what it’s called, after all – “What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”
