Seven Things That Make Twitter Even More Relevant

Twitter RelevancePeople often ask me about which social network do I use the most. To be honest, I’ve never tied myself to any one particular social network and I use all leading social networks for definitive needs. I use LinkedIn as a professional networking and hiring tool, Twitter as a means for marketing, YouTube for video promotions and Facebook for advertising and customer service. And I’ve to admit that I’ve liked whatever I’ve seen of Google+ so far as well.

At the end of the day, I believe it’s all about relevance. I strongly believe that each social network caters to a definitive niche and that’s what decides how you best use it. Twitter is a classic example and in this post, I present 7 reasonings on what makes Twitter even more relevant.

To The Point

When it comes to meaningful communication, it’s best to be short and to the point. Though Twitter’s 140 character limit was originally seen as a bottleneck, it’s actually proven to be a blessing in disguise. There’s no room for beating around the bush and you’ve got to adopt a to the point approach in your tweets.

Simplicity

I often say that Twitter is the simplest social network around. It’s easy to use and you don’t need to know rocket science in order to figure out how things work in Tweetosphere. Everything is intuitive – whether its retweets, follow/ unfollow, mentions or retweets. Simplicity helps bring in relevance.

Apps

There are tons of desktop as well as mobile apps for Twitter which you can use. In contrast, other social networks are either limited to the web or offer only a handful of mobile apps. Easy access if often the stepping stone in establishing relevance.

Audience

Twitter isn’t glamorous like Facebook and entertaining like Google+. On the contrary, it’s all about the content (real time information) and how to best disseminate it effectively to a wider audience. Based on experience, I can safely bet that my Twitter audience on the whole is more mature than my followers on any other social network. A mature audience is one of the key ingredients of relevant conversations.

Change

As compared to Facebook, Twitter has always handled changes gracefully. It recently introduced a couple of new tabs which were very well received by users all over the world. This is in stark contrast to Facebook where changes are almost always followed up with public backlash.

Reach

Though it does not have an astronomical user base such as Facebook, Twitter’s reach is phenomenal. Till date, Twitter has more than 105,779,710 registered users and a whopping 300,000 new users sign up per day. No other social network (be it Facebook, Myspace, Google+ or others) can match the number of users joining the twitter bandwagon with every passing day. Twitter receives 180 million unique visitors per month.

Engagement

Last but not the least, Twitter makes a fantastic social engagement tool. I use it to interact with my followers on a day-to-day basis, reach out to business, products or services, ask questions and appropriately answer any questions that my followers may have.

Do you think Twitter ranks high on the relevancy quotient? Please share your opinion by leaving a comment.

  1. I have always been an anti twitterer, but recently started using it more and more, especially on an interaction level.  I must say, I am now an ADDICT!!  It really is a great tool for business.

  2. I really like Twitter and still use it a lot, G+ is better in every aspect however, besides the 140 character limit (to the point aspect), which really becomes annoying in twitter if you use G+ a lot. To be honest, on all other points G+ will be the winner (you should add all Gmail users to the current G+ users to get its true reach)

  3. I have to say I’ve never heard anyone describe Facebook as glamorous. Nor Google+ as entertaining. But why not? i would probably reverse those descriptions myself. With Facebook’s homey baby pictures, child performances and pet photos, it’s definitely lighter fare. G+ on the other hand, and I joined day one, is a sophisticated platform for discussions about cooking, photography and of course tech..with really quite a glamorous UX. But that’s just my take.

  4. its all relative to the user, but as a super user the real-time non-invasive engagement factor (whether you call it simplicity or engagement) I just find it more powerful for me as a protocol that powers my Facebook, Google+ etc.  Facebook and google although mobile worthy will remain for now web-centric for me.

  5. I love Twitter for all the reasons you mention. Especially the point you make about how they’ve rolled out changes without the backlash that seems to follow every Facebook upgrade. Although I would point out that not everyone on Twitter is what you’d call a “mature audience” (notably celebrities)… but if your audience is mature, you’re fortunate (and you’ve probably earned that audience).

  6. I like Twitter for many of the reasons you mention, especially the point about talking in short bursts and getting to the point. I like Twitter as a resource b/c I can get the information I need on any subject. I’ve defined some lists and categorized followers appropriately. I also agree about the relevance of social media. I use LinkedIn differently than I do Facebook and certainly differently than I use Twitter. Google+ I’m still trying to grasp but the more I observe, the more I begin to understand. Good thoughts. Glad I discovered your blog on… yes, Twitter!

  7. I have always preferred Twitter for the reasons you mention, especially brevity and ease of use. For one of my brands though, I have to spend considerable time on Facebook because that’s where that target market is instead of Twitter. As you pointed out all these tools have their place in our toolbox as entrepreneurs and marketers building a relationship with our audiences.

  8. I use twitter for all the reasons you mentioned but the main asset in my opinion is the fact that twitter is simple, straightforwar and to the point. At the end of the day, and as you outline, it all comes down to what social media is the most suitable to your business and to the audience you are targetting.

  9. Twitter is a miracle.  Twitter is wonderful for all the reasons you point out.  Twitter — I am certain — is changing the world and will continue to change it faster than anything else can!  Linda

  10. As someone who is new to Twitter (only really active a month) and just starting to GET it, I see some things as very unique.
    1. Reaching out to people. There are two levels of interaction on Twitter – following someone and at-messaging to them – that have no equivalent. Compared to everything else I know – emailing, friending on Facebook, becoming a LinkedIn connection, and cold calling them – Twitter is just so noninvasive and such a good first step. People aren’t threatened by you, your interaction is quick and doesn’t take up much of their time, and because you can see what they’re tweeting about beforehand, you can target much better, which makes everyone happy.

    2. Who’s on it. As a Facebook veteran (got it in university 6 years ago!), what I’ve loved about Twitter is that there seem to be a lot more movers and shakers. Which, because I’ve already got Facebook, means a lot more to me than sheer numbers.

    3. Location search. It’s fantastic.

I’ve spent the last couple weeks promoting a drug policy conference we’re having in Calgary next month, and Twitter has been a godsend. All I’ve had to do is see who in Calgary is tweeting on the topic and seems like they’d be responsive, tell them who I am and what’s up, and most of the time they thank ME for letting them know about it!! It’s permission marketing at its greatest and makes my job a ton of fun. Using Twitter to alert the media too – and again, they thank me for giving them a lead for a story.

To sum it up: Twitter is incredible. I wish I’d gotten around to using it earlier.
