Quit Facebook Day – Hype or Reality?

[smartads]

31st May came and it passed rather uneventfully. Amidst all the hype to protest against Facebook’s recent privacy flaws, the ‘May 31st Quit Facebook Day’ campaign fell flat on its feet. The campaign was run on www.quitfacebookday.com and nearly, 35,000 users have left the social networking site as part of this campaign.

Considering that Facebook has a subscriber base of nearly 500 million and more than 150,000 members sign-up every day, the number of users who quit is hardly significant. To be precise, it comes out to be less than 0.00007 percent of all Facebook users. All that the campaign managed to achieve was media hype and an impressive 2.2 million search results on Google.

One of the major reasons why the Quit Facebook campaign failed is because the site already unveiled major streamlined privacy controls. Most users who were earlier irked with Facebook over privacy concerns have appreciated and understood the new controls therefore they believe that there’s no reason to leave. After all, leaving apart the privacy mess, Facebook is a fantastic site.

Another reason why the campaign failed is that most Facebook users are reluctant to leave. Not many people want to go through the hassle of setting up their profile on another social networking site all over again. Further, it’s fair to say that a substantial percentage of Facebook users are so obsessed with the site that they are staunch loyalists and did not even give a thought to leaving their online home.

What also needs to be understood is that people are beginning to understand privacy better. They are taking charge of their profiles and they understand what’s best for them. Many users are more careful while choosing friends and deciding what access to grant to others.

There are some important lessons to be learnt from this campaign as well. One, Facebook needs to take privacy seriously (I believe it’s already started doing so) and it needs to be more sensitive to user concerns. Two, it needs to have an easy opt-out mechanism in place. Third, Facebook needs to have an effective PR campaign in place. It needs to shut out such negative publicity before it can do some serious damage to its reputation.

I’m sure quitting Facebook on May 31st was never a serious option for the online marketing community. While privacy is important, they have other serious business to attend to on Facebook.

So, did you or any of your friends quit Facebook on 31st May? If so, what were your reasons to quit? Do you see any names missing from your Facebook friend’s list? On the other hand, if you did not participate in this campaign, thank God for saving you the embarrassment of being a part of failed campaign.

Enjoy Facebook & don’t even think about quitting ever again.

  1. Howdy,

Facebook is center around friends that you can contact at will and discuss situations. My experience with it is that its no differ than any other social

marketing concept…find friends.. and request more friends.

I wrote a article on my blog about the friend gathering process that most people use to gain more friends on facebook. I must say that blog got a lot of

attention by thousands of curious people who wanted to know how they can gain more friends fro face book without the spamming.

It was my goal to show people that it doesn’t matter if you got 100 facebook friends or the limit of 5,000…if no one knows who you really are, than doing

friend request is just a waste of time.

You must concentrate on branding yourself before doing face book friend invites.

Thanks for letting me post my crazy thoughts..

  2. If anything, I hope that the quitfacebookday.com did give Facebook's CEO and developers a serious wake up call. Social media empires can fall as quickly as they are built if the public that fuels their development turns against them.

I use Facebook for both personal and professional reasons. In my opinion, it's a much better alternative to MySpace. (Remember when MySpace was THE social network?) However, if Facebook continues the current trend of bad pr stemming from poor privacy policies, it is safe to say that users will have no other option than to sign off and find other means of networking.

  3. Hoax, hype, media attention. It's all crap!

There are many reasons to quit facebook, the least of which is security or lack thereof. It has been said a zillion times before, but if you don't want the world to know, don't post it online.
    Simple.
People just need to be more educated about online security and not take it for granted.

And if you don't like facebook, quit. Nobody likes a whiner!
