A tool which supports you very well here is Tweetdeck’s “Edit before RT” function. Showing the appreciation for a tweet with a thoughtful edit can make a big difference in the amount of engagement your tweets are getting.

Listen to your followers: Measure and adjust

Observing your own tweeting patterns in order to find out what works with your followers and what doesn’t is highly important too.

      Yes, so you are right direct messages are an important topic. I like to use it as a more private form of communication once I have known some of my followers for longer already.

      As far as automating DM’s goes, I personally largely refrain from doing so as like you mentioned most of them are spam. So yes, in my experience DM’s work well after a relationship has been established via   @- replies.
