How Safe Are We On The Social Web?

[smartads]

On Wednesday the 17th of March, the BOSTON (Reuters) reported that Hackers flooded the Internet with virus-tainted spam that targets Facebook’s estimated 400 million users in an effort to steal banking passwords and gather other sensitive information. According to anti-virus software maker McAfee Inc, The emails tell recipients that the passwords on their Facebook accounts have been reset, urging them to click on an attachment to obtain new login credentials, If the attachment is opened, it downloads several types of malicious software, including a program that steals passwords.

We are told that Hackers have long targeted Facebook users, sending them tainted messages via the social networking company’s own internal email system. However, with this new attack last week, they are using regular Internet email to spread their malicious software. Last week’s scam has the potential to harm a lot of users. According to Dave Marcus, McAfee’s director of malware research and communications, “With Facebook as your lure, you potentially have 400 million people that can click on the attachment. If you get 10 percent success, that’s 40 million,”

Last week I wrote an article emphasizing the virtues of the social web and one reader made a comment after reading the article regarding social media user safety, she was expressing concerns that although it’s difficult to guarantee, privacy and hacker scams concern remains the biggest threats to Facebook and other social networking sites. I know a lot of people hold those same views. We have heard of cases where a user’s account was hacked in one of the social network sites and the hacker sent a message to all the users’ contacts requesting for cash or in other cases the hackers just steal user’s private details.

So in the age of social media, how safe are we? Are there ways we can be safe amidst the current threat on social web? In looking at these concerns, few points are worth considering:

1. Avoiding social media completely is not the solution. After all, privacy concerns pervade virtually every area of today’s modern world i.e. credit cards, regular emails, movies & music, social security information and so on.

2. Unconstructive panic or worries about it won’t solve any problem. Someone said, “Worry is like a rocking chair – it gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere.”

3. Make a conscious decision to get credible information on how to protect yourself and your data.

4. When you get suspicious emails or messages, if you practice just a little skepticism or patience, you probably won’t fall for any of these tricks.

In avoiding scams whether on the social media or in real life, using common sense is very important. If a bank is calling you about (account) numbers, it’s likely a scam as they should already have your details or where a phone network Service technician calls you requesting you to punch buttons into your phone. Sometimes safety means to just sit back and think twice. Think this over.

What other safety concerns do you have on the social web?

  5. One thing I would really like to comment on is that weightloss routine fast may be possible by the proper diet and exercise. Your size not only affects the look, but also the general quality of life. Self-esteem, melancholy, health risks, in addition to physical ability are damaged in putting on weight. It is possible to just make everything right and at the same time having a gain. In such a circumstance, a condition may be the culprit. While an excessive amount of food instead of enough body exercise are usually to blame, common medical conditions and trusted prescriptions could greatly increase size. Kudos for your post right here.
