Bill Cosby has every reason to show the middle finger to Twitter, after all the micro-blogging site has declared him dead, not once or twice – but at least four times in the last couple of years. Welcome to the new age of social media where people die online on Twitter and Facebook rather than in hospitals and accidents.
To make matters worse for Mr. Cosby, he is currently amongst the most talked about topics on Twitter (courtesy Twitter Trends) albeit for all the wrong reasons relating to his web death. There’s no shortage of users spreading rumors about the actor’s accidental death on the social networking site.
I’m alive
Cosby had to tweet the following message to prove that he’s well and truly alive and kicking butt. “Again, I’m rebuttaling [sic] rumors about my demise. But, I’m confirming I have an app” and “Emotional friends have called about this misinformation. To the people behind the foolishness, I’m not sure you see how upsetting this is.”
Hilarious as it may seem, Cosby is not amused and understandably so. When it happens once, you pass it off as a joke. When it happens the second time, you start getting concerned. And then when it repeats, you’ve every reason to believe that you are in some serious trouble.
To further dismiss any rumors that his Twitter account might have been hacked, Cosby even appeared as a guest on Larry King Live to confirm that he is quite alive.
Twitter Trends
While I liked the Twitter Trends feature when it was launched, I’ve observed that it is heavily misused by users to create hoaxes and spread rumors. When a subject tops Twitter Trends, it is further tweeted very often by users without determining the authenticity of the original tweet.
In case of Cosby, not only did he top Twitter Trends, he also figured in the most searched terms on Google.
There’s an iPhone app for that
I strongly believe that where there is a dead man, there is a will. Where there is a will, there is a way and then there’s a mobile app for that. Believe it or not but the latest ‘Twitter death’ incident is being used by certain sites to promote the free Bill Cosby iPhone app. After all, deaths can often result in huge spike in sales so why not make the most out of such rumors.
Twitter as a news source
The Cosby Twitter death incident should also serve as a scary reminder that we shouldn’t always trust Twitter as a reliable news source. While it is lightning fast, it isn’t always the most accurate and reliable.
There has been no shortage of similar rumors about Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga being involved in car accidents. Last week, Tom Cruise also learnt that Twitter can often lead to sleepless nights when he was the hot favorite subject of such rumors.
It isn’t funny
I agree with Cosby that it isn’t funny anymore. While social media is powerful, those with power must be responsible. This incident reminds us regarding the vulnerabilities of social media.
