Facebook rolled out a number of cool features on Wednesday, aimed at giving users more control and the ability to share information with small groups of people. So, how do these changes impact your business? Will these help boost your business’ prospects on Facebook or will they serve as a dampener?
I’ve been flooded with questions like these in the last couple of days so it’s my duty to educate my readers on how these changes impact your business. Although I wasn’t amongst the early adopters of Facebook when it launched but I’ve watched it transform into a magnificent business tool over the course of last few years.
Groups
The new Groups feature makes it so much easier for business users to share information with a small set of people. It’s non-intrusive to users and there are no more privacy concerns, period. In fact, given the immense popularity of Facebook amongst business users, I’m somewhat surprised that it took Mark Zuckerberg and company so long to figure this one out. You can now tag friends for groups just as you do them in photos. The new Groups feature allows you to add anyone you want to the group and they can add anyone they want to the group and you’re added. No permission asked or needed. Surely, it doesn’t get any more simple than this.
From a business perspective, it helps as you can split your friends into different groups – prospect customers, existing customers, partners, management, employees, dropouts etc. This helps manage information as well as people a lot easier than the “one size fits all” approach used in the past used by Facebook.
To make it even more enticing for business users, Facebook now offers complete support for email integration. So, now you can share information efficiently over Facebook with groups of individuals both internally and externally without any privacy concerns.
More User Control
I’ve always been an active proponent of the philosophy that Facebook should relinquish more control to users. It especially makes sense for business users, who thrive on such power and flexibility and I’m certain that this will help Facebook emerge as the most powerful social environment conducive to business users and enterprise needs.
Privacy has been a major concern amongst business users and I’m glad that Facebook has finally got it right, sooner than later.
Facebook Groups vs. Facebook Fan Pages vs. Twitter Lists
To be honest, Facebook Groups isn’t a new concept. Twitter Lists follow essentially the same concept – selective information sharing. Though I’m an ardent user of Twitter Lists, this feature didn’t really take off in the Tweetosphere primarily due to poor marketing and lack of user education.
Therefore, I believe it’s all the more important for Facebook to take time explain to users on how the new groups work. It is especially all the more important for business users who are looking for ways to innovate and come up with new Facebook-centric ideas to boost their business.
Many critics would argue that Facebook Groups is just another *marketing name* for Fan Pages. Groups serve as a place to share information devoted to a specific subject and they can be opened up or closed down to specific individuals. IMO, Facebook Groups offer much more potential than Fan Pages from an online marketer’s perspective. After all, targeted flow of information is always advantageous from a marketer’s perspective.
